2 urban luxury hotels to showcase Bengal ethnic arts and crafts this Christmas celebration

This Christmas, two luxury hotels in the city will focus on portraying Bengal ethnic arts and crafts using shola, patachitra art and hand-woven ethnic napkins in front of its guests and visitors.

ITC Sonar installed a shola Christmas tree in place of the traditional pine or fir, which is a unique amalgamation of traditional shola handcrafted in a contemporary design.

While the ITC Royal hotel has adopted the Bengal style of the patachitra art Christmas tree. Hand painted by local artist Soumyadeep Roy, this tree is a visualization of the traditional manger, depicting the birth of Jesus, a hotel official said.

“ITC Royal Bengal & ITC Sonar present ‘the art of celebration’ by rendering an ode to the cultural heritage of Bengal. At ITC hotels, our WelcomArt initiative celebrates indigenous art, providing a platform for local artists. Christmas trees are imbued with modernity, while celebrating the cultural heritage of the region, ”said Tejinder Singh, Managing Director of ITC Hotels & Cluster, ITC Royal Bengal & ITC Sonar.

Besides the shola Christmas tree, the “alpona” snowflake adorns the ground while a golden snowflake forms the star at the top of the tree. Adding to the regional flavor of the region, traditionally woven “gamchas” (hand woven napkins) wrap and decorate the festive gift boxes next to the tree.

The modest herbaceous Shola grows wild in inundated swampy areas. Under its tough outer bark, it has an inner core which is soft and milky white. This spongy, malleable and shiny Shola is painstakingly crafted into delicate figures, artifacts and ornaments.

Traditionally used to adorn and embellish, a wedding couple’s Shola headgear is a mandatory item in a Bengali wedding.

“This is in line with our philosophy of responsible luxury, which is part of our initiative to help maintain the region’s intrinsic flavor,” Singh said.
