Artober in Tenino: this month’s contests will celebrate art

October is canceled in Tenino. It’s “Artober” now.

To celebrate local art and artists, events will be organized throughout the month. There will be a scarecrow contest and tour, a fine art showcase and a coloring contest.

The winners of each contest will be announced on October 30. The prizes for the scarecrow and coloring contest will be a $ 21 wooden silver coin for first place, a $ 10 gift certificate for second place and a $ 5 gift certificate for third place .

Three prizes will be awarded for the Fine Arts Showcase: The People’s Choice, The Tenino Area Chamber of Commerce’s Choice and The Tenino Stone Carver’s Choice. The three winners will each receive a gift basket and a ribbon.

The Scarecrow Competition is free and open to businesses, groups and residents who live in the Tenino School District.

Entries can be traditional, humorous or contemporary. The deadline to enter the contest is October 16. Entry forms are available at the Tenino Timberland Library, the Iron Works Store, and online at

The Fine Art Showcase will be open to artists aged 16 and over who reside in Thurston County or live within a 25 mile radius of downtown Tenino. The theme is “Stone” and the works should be artistically interpreted to reflect the imagination and skill of the artists.

All traditional mediums are welcome and art can be 2D or 3D. Pieces should be at least 4 inches in measurement and no larger than 12 inches. Works must be submitted by October 17th. Applications will be exhibited in the historic city center for 10 days. Registration forms and more information are available online at

The coloring contest is free to citizens who live in the Tenino School District. There will be separate categories for ages 5 and under, 6 to 11, 12 to 17 and 18 and over.
