Cover Girl: Zenyatta featured in fine art photography book and New York gallery exhibit – Horse Racing News

Zenyatta now has a place of honor among the most photographic racehorses of the time. His fine art portrait in black and white on film is one of the highlights of a prestigious Manhattan gallery exhibition and of a book of fine art photographs called “American Thoroughbred”. Fine art photographer Neil Latham has photographed America’s greatest racehorses, but says Zenyatta was the horse that best captured the essence of the thoroughbred.

“It’s a matter of eyes with Zenyatta,” Latham said. “His eyes reveal his soul; she is such a deep creature. We made a very special bond that day of the photoshoot.

Zenyatta’s portrait is one of 26 images selected for the gallery’s exclusive exhibition. It was selected from 6,000 images taken during the three-year project that sent the photographer with a huge studio in Saratoga, Kentucky, Southern California on his quest to portray the inherent nature of the breed.

Legendary horse farms have opened for Latham to photograph their multi-million dollar horses, including Stonestreet Farm, Lane’s End, Coolmore, Gainsway, Spendthrift Farm, Ramsey Farm and Adena Springs. Latham also shot at racetracks and endangered himself in paddocks with runaway horses. He has photographed thoroughbred superstars such as AP Indy, Curlin, Tapit, Rachel Alexandra, Ghostzapper and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Zenyatta is a culmination of the 182-page coffee table ledger with 80 duotones featuring the mastery of light and shadow you’d expect from Ansel Adams-style photography, development, and printmaking. The footage is a mix of intriguing studio isolation shots of muscles shining after the breeze, lofty portraits and wild, unbridled shots of runaway horses raising dust, giving the footage a magical effect.

“As an artist, I am intrigued by the juxtaposition of strength and power with beauty and fragility,” explains Latham. “I wanted to exemplify determination and character through tight muscles and running veins after a fast run, and capture the wild spirit of a charging herd.”
