MoMA launches free online courses on modern art, photography, fashion and more

The subjects explore everything from photography and fashion to abstract painting, with guidance from curators, artists and designers at MoMA.

IIt may be some time before the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) reopens its doors to the public, but the newly renovated Contemporary Museum still wants to inspire art lovers during its forties. In addition to a virtual museum tour that gives access to the highlights of the collection, ranging from 19th-century paintings by Vincent van Gogh to modern LED art by Jenny Holzer, MoMA offers a series of live art lessons. free online for a home audience amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The nine courses, available through the Coursera e-learning platform, allow students to hear first-hand from MoMA curators, artists and designers, whose work is featured in the museum’s renowned collection and exhibitions.

The topics are, of course, art-oriented. However, the subjects are still “suitable for a wide audience,” the museum explains, exploring everything from photography and fashion to post-war abstract painting, as well as more general examinations of contemporary art.

Anyone can currently register for MoMA’s free online art classes. New sessions start every four weeks, but you can access content from previous courses when you register and courses can be taken at your own pace. What is contemporary art?

Using over 70 works of art from the MoMA collection as separate examples, this new course explores the question “What is contemporary art?” ”, Focusing on art produced between 1980 and today, especially in the last decade.

Fashion as design

MoMA’s Fashion as Design course focuses on the profound global impact – social, cultural, economic and environmental – of particular clothing and accessories, from kente fabric to 3D printed dresses, with interviews and studio tours with a range of designers, manufacturers and historians.

In the studio: post-war abstract painting

This course offers an in-depth examination of the materials, techniques, and approaches of seven New York School artists, including Willem de Kooning, Yayoi Kusama, Agnes Martin, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko.
